Question 21.2.3:
Naming: Is it appropriate to name a child after a relative of the opposite sex?

Answer:

Yes. However, you may run into some difficulty, depending on the name. Only a few Hebrew names are easily adaptable, such as Simhah (Joy), which can be used for either a boy or a girl. More often than not, you will have to look for a name with an allied meaning, or even merely a similar sound.

The FAQ is a collection of documents that is an attempt to answer questions that are continually asked on the soc.culture.jewish family of newsgroups. It was written by cooperating laypeople from the various Judaic movements. You should not make any assumption as to accuracy and/or authoritativeness of the answers provided herein. In all cases, it is always best to consult a competent authority--your local rabbi is a good place to start.
