January 2002: Camp Whittle

On the weekend of January 4-6, the Sioux North tribe participate in the annual campout at Camp Whittle in Fawnskin. In attendance were the entire tribe, except for Big Buck and Little Deer, who couldn't attend because Big Buck shattered his arm. First to arrive were Laughing Bear and Shooting Star and Flying Elbow and Bright Star. They claimed space in Cabin 13. Next to arrive were Red Sky, Red Feather, Quiet Song, Running Rabbit, and Little Bunny, who claimed space in Cabin 14. Last to arrive were Tiny Cloud, White Cloud, Big Thundercloud, Little Lightning, Broken Wing, and Beauty Pony, who joined the folks in Cabin 14. The girls played for a while, and then most of the tribe went out to dinner, with the Red Sky/Running Rabbit contingent remaining behind. While the first group ate dinner, Red Sky and Running Rabbit constructed a luxury dad's area ("tent") out of two tarps, lots of ropes and stakes, and a dissassembled bunk bed (giving both seating and a table). Red Sky, Running Rabbit, and their girls then went out to dinner. We all came back to lukewarm chocolate in the Arts and Crafts area, as the dining hall was still under construction.

The next morning, we ventured to breakfast in the unfinished dining hall, were we were greated with cold french toast, cool syrup, oatmeal, and bacon. At least we had some dominos. After a sumptuous repast, we returned to the cabin to plot our day. The girls started by exploring the igloo. Some girls then went sledding, while some of us went to shoot the bow and arrow (getting a bulls eye in the process). We also looked for scavenger hunt items. We rejoined up near the cabins, and then went to the lodge to meet for our hay ride. Unfortunately, it wasn't ready for us, so we did some arts and crafts while waiting.

Lunch was Domino's Pizza and juice boxes. Yumm. At least we got to play some more dominos. We then returned to our cabins to get ready for sledding. We trudged to the hill with our sleds, and we all became kids again. The hill was designed with a little bump, which initially sent folks flying, but later just created some sore butts. Girls went down. Dads went down. Girls went down with their dads. Dads went down with other dads. A great time was had by all. We then came back for the nation games, where, to put it bluntly, "Girls rule, boys drool". In other words, the girls beat the boys in the tug of war... twice, and the girl's dads beat the boy's dads in the tug of war. We then finished collecting our scavenger hunt material, and turned it in (we ended up getting in a tie for 1st place).

Dinner was fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy, and juice. I could swear it was from KFC. At least it was edible, and we had our dominos. We then had a lovely campfire, where almost every tribe did a skit. Our skit involved someone at a bus stop looking for a train. The girls and some dads went to bed, while other dads remained around our local campfire swapping stories.

The next morning, while some dads/girls packed and hit the road, others hit the dining hall for breakfast. Cold waffles, bacon, sausage, and frozen juice. And Tiny Cloud had left with the dominos. Those left then returned to camp, and while the dads packed, the girls played.
