May 2001: GA-Sioux Nation Picnic

[Canopy at Woodley Park]On Sunday, May 20, 2001, the Sioux Tribe gathered for the Nation Picnic (which we sponsored). In attendance was Crazy Horse and Tiger Lily; Flying Elbow and Bright Star; Laughing Bear, Singing River, and Shooting Star; Running Rabbit and Little Bunny; Thunder Cloud and Golden Dove; Tiny Cloud and White Cloud; Broken Wing and Beauty Pony; and Big Buck and Little Deer (along with a few wives and siblings). Running Rabbit and crew were the first to arrive, setting our our canopy and tribal banner with the help of Thunder Cloud and his family. Shortly thereafter came Crazy Horse and Tiger Lily, followed by Big Buck and his family. The Chief, Flying Elbow showed up next, followed by the rest.

[Tiger Lily on her Scooter][Little Deer at play with her sister]Our canopy was set up near a playground at Woodley Park. The girls enjoyed playing with balls, on the swings, with their scooters and bikes. We all shared in our delicious picnic lunches, and talked about the past year and upcoming events. Josie came by and handed out the patches (which were beautifully designed by our own Running Rabbit and Little Bunny).

At 2:00pm, it was time for Nation Games. The Chief had selected three games. The first was the traditional YMCA Tug of War. Before the official tug of war, there was the unofficial one: Tiny Cloud vs. the girls of the tribe. Your humble scribe didn't note who won. After that the official games started, with the official boys vs. girls Tug-of-War. Naturally, the girls won. Twice. This was followed by a relay race where you had to run to out and back with a potato between your knees, passing the potato to the next player. The third game involved balloons. The kids blew up balloons, and then had to run to the other end and pop it by sitting on it. All the girls had a great time.

The day was beautiful, and we all enjoyed the sun. We didn't want to leave, some staying from 11:00am to as late as 5:30pm. A great event. We are looking forward to the next meeting at Big Buck's house, and to the campout at El Capitan.
