June 2000: El Capitan Campout

[Our Campsite]Over the weekend of June 9-10, 2000, the Sioux North tribe joined the remainder of the GA-Sioux Nation at the El Capitan Canyon campsite for the annual family campout. Participating in this event were Flying Elbow and Bright Star (along with Flying Elbow's wife Mary and son Brandon), Crazy Horse, Laughing Bear, Singing River and Shooting Star, Running Rabbit and Little Bunny, Red Sky and Red Feather (along with Red Sky's wife Robin and other daughter Rebecca), and Tiny Cloud and White Cloud (along with Tiny Cloud's wife Dana and son Cory).

[Cutting wood for the fire]First to arrive on the scene was Crazy Horse, followed shortly thereafter by Running Rabbit and Little Bunny. We worked together, sharing tools and experience, to set up our tents and make our campground a home. During this time, we also learned about nature, identifying the safe and poisonous plants in our vicinity ("Watch out for the clusters of three leaves... that's Poison Oak!")Around dinnertime, we were joined by our new Chief, Flying Elbow, and his family. Again, we worked together to help Flying Elbow set up his tent. We shared dinner and stories until there were many stars in the sky, and then bunked down on our comfy (ahem) air matresses.

The next morning, we were joined by the families of Laughing Bear and Tiny Cloud. We made our breakfasts, and then participated in the nation games. Our girls pulled at the tug of war, and threw water ballons at their dad. Tiny Cloud and his wife Dana even participated in the Elephant Race!

[Our Pile of Seaweed]After lunch, Red Sky and his family arrived. While Red Sky worked on his tent (it took a while to set up), the rest of the tribe went to the beach. We played in the surf, and collected the largest pile of seaweed on the beach. We explored the local tide pools, and the girls were able tosee and touch Sea Anemones in their native habitat. We then buried Crazy Horse in the sand, dressing him up as a mermaid, down to the scales, the seaweed for hair, and a throughly drenched head. For this artistic effort, we won a first place award!

After a shared tribal feast of Cajun Chicken (provided by Tiny Cloud); Hot Dogs, Burgers, and Salad (provided by Laughing Bear; Corn (provided by Crazy Horse), veggies and potatoes (provided by Red Sky), Spaghetti and strawberries (provided by Running Rabbit), and other delacacies (provided by Flying Elbow), we went to the nation campfire. To the crys of Cartwheel! Cartwheel! we celebrated our outgoing chiefs and welcomed our incoming ones. The tribe also received a special recognition as winners of the Sprit Stick; this recognized our tribe's energetic participation in the GA-Sioux nation. We performed the "lawnmower" skit, proving that sometimes all you need is a big Jerk!

After a good night's sleep, we got up to share our last camp breakfast and begin packing. We were all looking forward to getting together for our upcoming end of year party.
