"Sioux North" Tribe of the GA-Sioux NationNorth Valley YMCA Y-Princesses |
On April 8, 2000, the Sioux North tribe sponsored Rocket Day for the entire GA-Sioux nation. The event was held at Monroe High School in North Hills. The following tribe members were able to attend: Crazy Horse and Tiger Lily, Thunder Cloud and Golden Dove, Running Rabbit and Little Bunny, Flying Elbow and Bright Star, Tiny Cloud and White Cloud, and Red Sky and Red Feather. Singing River and Shooting Star celebrated their birthdays.
As sponsors, the tribe took turns staffing the checkin table and the rocket examination table. The image to the right shows Crazy Horse and Tiger Lily working at the checkin table together with Red Sky. Others working at registration included Red Sky and Tiny Cloud, while Flying Elbow and Thunder Cloud worked launch control. The tribe also thanks the two firemen (and their fire truck) who helped oversee the event safety. We also found the use of the "safety cage" very helpful.
5-4-3-2-1. Crazy Horse and Tiger Lily opened the event with the first "whoosh" of the day. The girls lined up and launched their rockets until about 3:30PM. We had fun watching them go up, and chasing them as they came down. Most importantly, we had fun being with our friends!
Flying Elbow finished Rocket Day and launched a giant yellow missile that (for a few days) served as a reminder of Rocket Day by hanging between two telephone poles across Nordhoff, just west of Haskell. We closed the day with a trip to Dairy Queen.
