Over the weekend of March 18-19, 2000, the Sioux North tribe joined the rest of the GA-Sioux nation at Camp Fox, the Glendale YMCA camp on Catalina Island. The following tribe members were able to attend: Crazy Horse and Tiger Lily, Laughing Bear and Singing River, Running Rabbit and Little Bunny, Flying Elbow and Bright Star, and Tiny Cloud and White Cloud.

Our CabinThe campout started with a two-hour cruise to the island from Long Beach. Some of the dads were able to get down early and visit the aquarium with their girls. The trip reminded us of "Gilligan's" cruise with the ship breaking the crest of each swell making it so no one could walk a straight line. We enjoyed the lights of the L.A. harbor and of the Queen Mary, as well as the sea breeze and salt air as our proud ship forged onward. The feeling when we got off the boat was "Wow!" when we saw the camp and our cabins. Our cabin was a cabana directly on the beach (in the picture of the bay, it is the second cabin above the pier; a closer view is to the right, with the Sioux banner flying). The cabin was open to the elements in the front and partially on the sides. We got to sleep with the sounds of the surf!

Saturday was a very busy day for the Sioux tribe. We started with a hearty breakfast. We then climbed to the top of Bible Peak, which was a much harder hike then it looked. Our tribe has renamed it "Heart Attack Hill"! All the girls made it to the top, and we cheered as we could see the entire camp. The view was heavenly from the hill. This is where our tribal picture for this trip was taken.

The Fish we caught Singing River's FishAfter camping, we got into two rowboats and went fishing. All of the girls caught fish during the weekend, and our tribe continued its tradition of catching the largest fish. The image to the far left shows Little Bunny and Running Rabbit with one of the larger fish we caught. The image to the near left shows a fish caught by Singing River. Overall, our tribe caught 21 fish! Singing River's fish was a 15" white fish, and Little Bunny's was a 12" white fish. The girls also caught a variety of calico bass and blue perch. Our chef's in the mess hall taught Flying Elbow how to filet the fish before they cooked it up on the grill.

After more delicious Camp Fox food (and after some of the dad's partook in the freshly caught fish!), the girls went swimming in the camp's cove. We then kayaked in the bay, some of us getting soaked in the process.

In the evening was the campfire. The day took its tooll on two of our daughters, but the remainder of the tribe did the whole tribe proud. We performed a modified "Attention!" skit; the girls sang the song "I want to be a friend of yours", and then they rocked the camp by dancing to Britney Spears. During the campfire, our fishing prowess was recognized, and the cabin won second place in the scavenger hunt.

At BreakfastSunday was spent winding down. We had a full breakfast. The image to the right shows Bright Star, Singing River, and Tiger Lily at breakfast. The girls did more exploration on the beach, while some took advantage of fishing off the pier. Some girls collected flowers and handed them to other campers. We then had another two-hour boat ride back to Long Beach, and we went home... tired, exhausted, and thoroughly happy!
