March 2000: Monthly Meeting at Flying Elbow's

Sioux North Princesses at Flying Elbow's House

L to R: Shooting Star, Bright Star, Tiger Lily, Little Bunny, Red Feather, and Singing River

On Friday, March 10th, 2000, the Sioux North Tribe gathered together for our monthly meeting at Flying Elbow's house. In attendance were Flying Elbow and Bright Star, Crazy Horse and Tiger Lily, Laughing Bear, Singing River and Shooting Star, Running Rabbit and Little Bunny, Red Sky and Red Feather. Flying Elbow and Bright Star were excited and anxious about having the meeting for the first time at their house (new members and all). All of the crafts were laid out, the snacks were ready to be warmed, and the CD player was setup for the girls' favorite music. Everything was all set until the unexpected happened. A power outage took out power to the whole block  one-half hour before everyone was to arrive. The scramble was on to gather up all of the candles in the house and strategically place them so that the house would be uniformly illuminated where needed. As the tribe began to arrive it was obvious that we were going to need to improvise on certain events that were planned ! for the evening (cold rather than warm snacks, crafts by candlelight, sing with no music, etc.). Even coffee could not be made without risking burning down the house.

As the tribe settled in, we decided that we would go outdoors with a few candles and hold the meeting in the front yard. The girls thought it was a great idea and the dads enjoyed it as well. We collected wampum and the girls practiced their skits for the upcoming Camp Fox weekend. This was to be the final chance that everyone could get together to go over the skits and perfect them before Camp Fox. The girls sang their hearts out and virtually "lit up" the dark neighborhood with their voices. Although it was a bit chilly that evening, everyone had fun holding the meeting outside. We then went back inside for some crafts. It was a bit difficult to see but we worked the best we could with what we had. The girls made "puff ball" bracelets and head dresses with the crafts. The dads discussed Rocket Day possibilities and possible alternatives in case we could not get a site to sponsor the event. As the meeting broke, up approximately two hours later, the power and lights finally came back on and we could see everything again. All in all, it was a unique and exciting experience and everyone had a good time in the dark. We parted until next time.
