2005 Changes

December 2005:

First, I did the usual round of link updates. A special "nod of thanks" goes to ljuserhead aaroads (Alex Nitzman) for his roundup of regional updates that he mailed me, and to Kim Russell for the set of links he provided. Thanks also to ljuserhead bossjock967 for providing me the updated link to his website, DelMarVa Highways. A minor "boo" to Mr. Comrade Yamamoto, for organizing his pages so badly that I ended up having to remove a bunch of links into his site, and settle for a single top link.

Added a new FAQ related to finding out speed limits on highways. This was done to showcase a link from Larry Scholnick to a page that has an extensive listing of every segment of road in the entire city of Los Angeles that has a speed limit other than 25 MPH, grouped by speed limit. If you know of similar pages for other California cities, please let me know.

Updated information on the following routes, based on my research(1), and contributions of information on leads (via direct mail or Usenet) from Dennis Carr(2), Cameron Kaiser(3), Joe Myers(4), Larry Scholnick(5), Greg Skinner(6): Route 22(1), Route 36(3), Route 55(1), Route 74(1), Route 83(4), Route 85(6), Route 91(1,5), Route 99(1), Route 241(2), I-5(1), I-405(1), I-605(1)

Updated the legislative information page. Nothing of real interest. The legislature seems to not be doing much this time of year.

Reviewed the December CTC Agenda for items of interest. Noted the following items:

November 2005:

As usual, I did link updates. This is a reminder: if you are moving your highway site, or you are aware of a site that has moved, please let me know the new address.

Received a pointer to the Wikipedia Page on California Highways. I'm not sure what to do with this. I'm not sure I want to link to it, as it is really incomplete and incorrect in some areas. On the other hand, making it correct would be (in effect) moving much of the information from my site into the wiki. I don't really want to do that either. So, for now, I'll just note it here, as well as noting that some of the links at the bottom aren't the greatest.

Added some interesting questions and answers to the FAQ, based on information sent me by my Caltrans contacts.

Updated information on the following routes, based on my research(1), and contributions of information on leads (via direct mail or Usenet) from Dennis Carr(2), Carl Rodgers(3): Route 57(1), Route 91(1), I-210(2), I-880(3).

Reviewed the November CTC Agenda (there was no October meeting) for items of interest. Noted the following items:

October 2005:

Did the usual round of link updates (I say this every month, but that's why it is usual). Updated the page on exit numbering.

Updated information on the following routes, based on my research, and contributions of information on leads (via direct mail or Usenet) from Robert Cruickshank(1), Marc Fannin(2), Andy Gross(3), David Klonoff(4), Kurumi(5), Chris Powell(6), Joseph Rouse(7), Bill Sharp(8), Chris Thomas(9), Andrew G. Tompkins(10), and Sean Tongson(11): Route 1(4), Route 35(4), Route 41(2), Route 46(2), Route 117(11), Route 180(9), Route 238(3), Route 275(7), US 101(8,7), I-5(1), I-15(6), I-40(10), I-210(6), I-215(10), I-380(11), I-680(5)

Updated the legislative information page. Mostly updates, except for the following chaptered items:

Reviewed the September CTC Agenda for items of interest. Noted the following items:

I'll note that its interesting to see the sort of emergency repairs Caltrans has to do, even though it doesn't always make it into the highway pages. For example, from the September 2005 Agenda:

*** Kern 06U-Ker-5 9.3/9.5 Near Grapevine, 6.4 miles south of Route 99. On June 29, 2005, a tanker truck carrying aviation fuel crashed, spilled fuel, and ignited at this location. This project will repair damaged guardrail and median thrie beam barriers. Also 1000-foot segment of asphalt pavement will be ground down and repaved across four lanes and shoulders.

*** San Bernardino 08U-SBd-62 65.0/73.5 Near Twentynine Palms from 10 miles east of Ironage Street to 4 miles west of Highway 177. On July 24, 2005, an intense rainstorm occurred in the low desert area causing flooding, erosion and undermining of roadway. This project will repair roadway embankment, drainage and pavement in order to reopen the highway.

*** San Diego 11S-SD-15 M11.4 In San Diego, at the south end entry to the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) Reversible Express Lanes (H Avenue Overcrossing). On April 1, 2005, a failure occurred in the pneumatic popup delineator system due to a major loss in air pressure (compressor failure). The system failure makes it necessary to manually place delineators in order to prevent wrong way accidents. This project repairs the two existing gates, replaces the compressor, and replaces selected leaking components.

I do occasionally get kudos for the site. Here's a recent one:

September 2005:

Started the process of validating the external and internal linkages. Most of the links have been validated, except for Joel Windmiller's who is still promising me to get me his new site name. Bad links have been marked in accordance with the following table:

[Road Closed] Link Down or Disappeared. If you know to where this link has moved, please send me email. If I haven't heard anything, it may be removed at the next round of updates. Often, these are kept on the list in anticipation of their returning. The original URL is retained as an HTML comment.
[Under Construction] Site is up, but is undergoing extensive renovation. If you are aware of renovation being completed on this site, please let me know.
[Rough Road: Site May Be Down] Site may be down. The name was there, but the site was non-responsive at the last check. If you have further status on this site, please let me know.
[Dead End] No Longer Maintained. This site is still up, but is no longer being maintained.

Did the usual process of link updates.

Updated the legislative information page. Mostly updates, except for the following chaptered items:

Reviewed the August CTC Agenda for items of interest. Noted the following items:

The September agenda will be examined in the October updates, as the meeting hasn't happened yet and the book items are not yet available.

August 2005:

First: An explanation for the lack of updates in May, June, and July 2005. During this period, I was recuperating from sinus surgery, buying a new house, packing, moving, and unpacking. I'm finally digging out enough so that I can start incorporating the backed-up updates, so here we go...

Updated the front page of the site to make it clear that legal questions must go to Caltrans directly, via their CONTACT US page. Updated the FAQ regarding traffic volumes. Made some corrections to the California State Highways Before 1965 page. Adding some information on signage standards, based on information posted on Usenet by Jonathan Winkler. Added a new recommended book.

Did the usual round of link updates.

Updated the legislative information page. Mostly updates, except for the following chaptered items:

Reviewed the March, April, May, and July CTC Agendas for items of interest. Noted the following items:

But wait, there's still more. I also reviewed the House and Senate versions of SAFETEA-LU (the new transportation act), identifying California projects. The office of Rep. Henry Waxman was of great help in this. Good references were the text of the conference report accompanying HR3, the Thomas search engine for Congress, the Earmark Database from Taxpayers for Common Sense (which doesn't reflect the conference results), and some other stuff I found in search engines. The California Institute for Federal Policy Research also has an excellent page on transportation reauthorization information. Senator Boxer also has a page on the bill, including a list of projects. I'm not going to list the specifics of all the projects here, but the following highways had their pages updated as a result of the bill (do a search for SAFETEA-LU):

KEY
HPP High Priority Project. These are derived from a specific table in the act.
NRS Projects of National and Regional Significance, Section 1301 of the act.
NCI National Corridor Infrastructure Improvement Program, Section 1302 of the act.
TI Transportation Improvements, Section 1934 of the act.

NOTE: I have attempted to identify appropriate routes for each project. If I have erred, or missed allocating a project to a route, please drop me a note and I'll correct it in the next round of updates.

The following projects within California are off the state highway system. These projects are like a pork stir-fry: lots of tasty vegetables (good projects), with a few bits of pork thrown in:

April 2005:

Added some more questions and answers to the FAQ, based on questions received during late March and April. Did the usual link updates. Added a link to the Caltrans Photolog: http://video.dot.ca.gov/photolog/. I also have the list of improvements in the new highway bill that I will be reviewing while I'm home recovering from sinus surgery the first week of May.

Not a lot this month in specific highway updates. I've updated information on the following routes, based on my research(1), and contributions of information or leads (via direct mail or via Usenet) from Patrick C. Carroll(2), David P Hogan(3), Dale Sanderson(4): Route 61(2), Route 91(3), Route 260(2), US 6(4).

Updated the legislative information page. Mostly updates, except for the following:

I'm still out of enthusiam, and am thus postponing looking at the CTC minutes.

March 2005:

Updated the FAQ and the PostMiles page to provide a reference to the 2003 Traffic Volumes page.

Updated specific highway information on the following routes, based on my research(1) and contributions of information (direct mail or via Usenet) from Dennis Carr(2), Mark Furqueron(3), Lee Gordon(4), David P Hogan(5), Robert Raburn(6), Mark Roberts(7), Joel Windmiller(8):Route 1(7), I-8(1), Route 12(8), Route 29(8), US 40(8), US 60(8), Route 74(2), Route 76(5), US 80(8),Route 84(6), Route 91(2,5,8), US 97(8), US 99(8), US 101(8), Route 154(8), Route 163(3), US 199(8), Route 220(4), US 299(8), US 395(8), and US 399(8).

Did the usual round of link updates. I didn't feel up to going through the March CTC agenda this month. I'll do it next month.

Updated the legislative information page. Lots and lots of new bills were introduced of interest. There were a few bills that made me go "huh?" (such as the marriage act); a batch of identity theft legislation; and a new naming resolution that is obviously a political "thank you" (SCR 28).

February 2005:

Did the usual round of link updates. As a result of Jeff Stapleton moving Staplers Highways to the Western Exit Guide, I had to adjust the corresponding exit number links on lots and lots of highway pages. [2009 Note: Alas, the Western Exit Guide was gone as of 2009]

Updated specific highway information on the following routes, based on my research and contributions of information (direct mail or via Usenet) from Frank Aros(1), Robert Cruickshank(2), Carlos Fernandez-Gray(3), Andy Field(4), Michael Kelly(5), Bobby Liao(6), Carl Rogers(7), Steve Varner(8), or from research done by me(9):Route 82(6), Route 99(4), Route 100(7), Route 242(5), I-80(2), I-710(9), US 101(3), US 395(1,8).

January 2005:

Updated specific highway information on the following routes, based on my research and contributions of information (direct mail or via Usenet) from an Anonymous Contributor, Dennis Carr(1), Patrick C. Carroll(2), Andy Gross(3), Joe Rouse(4): Route 22(1), Route 29(2), Route 84(3), Route 238(3), I-80(4), US 101.

Did the usual round of link updates.

Added updated information on mile markers to the post mile numbering section, based on information posted on misc.transport.road by Joe Rouse. This information was included with his permission. The discussion also incorporates responses on the original post that were on misc.transport.road, including a post by argatlam_roads.

Updated the legislative information page. There were two new potential naming resolutions of interest, but we are far too early in the legislative process for the silly signing season to have started.

Attempted to check the January 2005 CTC meeting agendas, but the meeting agendas still show as "Not Available". Perhaps next month.
